Natural antibacterial anti-mold, air purification and humidity control
Traditional Japanese Natural Paint
Shikkui is traditional Japanese paint with thousands of years of history. Famous traditional Japanese buildings such as Osaka Castle, Kumamoto Castle and Himeji Castle use it indoors and outdoors. The main component is coral reef from the sea, formed over hundreds of millions of years of geological change. Shikkui features include hypoallergenic, anti-dust mite, anti-mold, antibacterial, humidity control, waterproof, antistatic, highly breathable and VOC-free properties. In recent years, natural healthy materials have gained increasing attention. In Japan, shikkui - the wall material used since ancient times - has become very popular again.
Higher alkalinity than soap, natural anti-mold, no chemicals needed
Have you ever seen soap mold? Why doesn't soap mold even in humid, bacteria-rich bathroom environments? Because soap has high alkalinity that prevents mold growth.
Shikkui is a natural material with pH 13, higher alkalinity than soap (pH 8-10). It quickly kills bacteria and viruses, and mold cannot grow in humid environments. Very suitable for Hong Kong homes, especially for families with children, elderly or those with weaker immunity.
Natural antibacterial, anti-mold, inhibits dust mite growth!
Shikkui hypoallergenic paint is alkaline material that inhibits bacteria, viruses, mold and dust mites. Its humidity control keeps indoor and wall surfaces drier, making it harder for bacteria and mold to grow. Antistatic surfaces don't attract dust easily. Dust is food for dust mites, so shikkui makes it difficult for dust mites to survive. Finally, shikkui is 100% inorganic material, providing no nutrition for bacteria, viruses, mold or dust mites.
Hypoallergenic: Decomposes allergens, inhibits dust mite growth
Shikkui hypoallergenic paint is alkaline with humidity control, keeping indoor and wall surfaces drier. Antistatic surfaces don't attract dust easily. In alkaline, dry environments with little dust food, dust mites struggle to survive.
Shikkui components also decompose allergens from dust mites and pollen, reducing indoor allergens - the best wall material choice for allergy sufferers.
Adsorption / Absorbs and decomposes chemicals, formaldehyde, VOC and odors
-
Can absorb and decompose formaldehyde (the "invisible killer" of new homes) and other VOC volatile organic compounds.
Antistatic / Less dust attraction!
-
Shikkui hypoallergenic paint does not generate static electricity. Therefore, it doesn't attract dust easily and can stay clean white for a long time. We have received customer feedback that our nursing home waste facility project also stays clean with almost no odor.
Static electricity is the main cause of indoor dust accumulation: it attracts dust to ceilings, which then falls when it accumulates. So even with windows closed and frequent cleaning, dust quickly reappears on floors and furniture. Dust is a breeding ground for dust mites; antistatic coatings help reduce indoor dust mites.
Humidity control / Less condensation and mold!
-
Shikkui hypoallergenic paint is a porous material with countless fine pores that absorb or release moisture well. It moderates air humidity to prevent wall condensation and maintain building durability. In humid summer it absorbs moisture; in dry winter it releases moisture, creating comfortable indoor environments. (Note: Excessive use of humidifiers or heating may cause condensation when exceeding performance limits.)
Durability / Stronger over time! Over 20 years outdoor use
-
After application, shikkui hypoallergenic paint gradually absorbs air CO2 and slowly solidifies back into limestone. So over time, it becomes stronger.
Thermal insulation / Fire resistant!
-
Shikkui is highly fire resistant and certified as non-combustible under Japanese Building Standards Law Article 2.9. In fire, it does not produce dioxins or harmful gases and prevents fire spread. Its porous structure also provides high thermal insulation, keeping interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.
Eco-friendly
-
Shikkui's base component is lime. Lime is natural fertilizer; disposal and recycling are relatively eco-friendly.

What is Japanese Shikkui
What is Shikkui?
-
Humans have used lime as building material for 10,000 years. Lime's natural properties include hypoallergenic, anti-dust mite, anti-mold, antibacterial, humidity control, waterproof, antistatic, highly breathable and VOC-free.
In Japan, lime has been used since ancient times to make wall materials called "shikkui". Famous traditional buildings like Osaka Castle, Kumamoto Castle and Himeji Castle use it indoors and outdoors.
Shikkui is traditional Japanese paint with thousands of years of history. Its main component is coral reef from the sea, formed into natural limestone over hundreds of millions of years. Processed limestone with other natural materials becomes quality healthy paint.
Shikkui Transformation Process
Natural limestone (CaCO3) heated to 1000°C in a kiln becomes“quicklime” (CaO) ,quicklime with water produces“slaked lime” (Ca(OH)2). Adding natural seaweed algae and hemp fiber creates shikkui wall material. After application, shikkui absorbs CO2 from air, releases moisture and returns to limestone - slowly becoming natural mineral, stronger over time.
Shikkui Components

Shikkui components are all natural materials, safe and healthy.
Shikkui Features
Shikkui has higher alkalinity than soap, natural anti-mold, no chemicals needed
Have you seen soap mold? Soap doesn't mold even in humid bathrooms because of its high alkalinity. Shikkui is natural material with pH 13, higher than soap (pH 8-10), quickly killing bacteria and viruses. Mold cannot grow in humid environments. Very suitable for Hong Kong homes, especially with children, elderly or those with weaker immunity.
Shikkui doesn't generate static, less dust than wallpaper or emulsion
Research shows dust reappears quickly after cleaning because of walls and ceilings. Air flow friction generates static on ceilings and walls, attracting dust that accumulates then falls. So even after evening mopping, floors have dust by morning.
Emulsion paint has more resin and generates static easily. Shikkui doesn't generate static, so it doesn't attract dust - less maintenance, cleaner indoors.
High durability, over 20 years outdoor use
After application, shikkui absorbs CO2 from air, releases moisture and returns to limestone (marble is a type of limestone). So it slowly becomes natural mineral, stronger over time. For indoor and outdoor use, lifespan over 20 years.
