Freshwater diatom

Premium freshwater diatom - high whiteness, bright vivid colours

Wakkanai and standard diatom raw materials are yellowish, limiting paint content. Too much diatom makes colours too yellow. This is more pronounced with powdered diatom; granular is better. Sanga uses premium pure white freshwater diatom - even at 50% powdered diatom, colours stay bright and vivid.

Breathable binder

Patent binder

Sanga uses Japanese extra-white freshwater diatom with a patent breathable binder that doesn't reduce diatom performance. Easy to clean and apply, very durable.

Sanga uses 50% freshwater diatom - outstanding moisture absorption and air purification
Sanga excels at high humidity
To demonstrate absorption, many spray water on diatom paint and judge by how fast liquid is absorbed - this is misleading.
When diatom absorbs moisture, no water stain remains. Stains mean moisture is still in gaps; as diatom absorbs it, stains fade. Faster stain disappearance = stronger vapour absorption.

Compare stain disappearance speed to see true absorption ability.
High stain resistance
Sanga combines high vapour absorption with low liquid absorption.
Sanga maintains vapour absorption by preserving pore size - water vapour passes through for humidity control. By optimizing pore structure, superhydrophobic effect* prevents liquid penetration and staining. (Patent pending) ※Lotus-leaf effect - fractal structure.

Excellent air purification
Sanga uses special binder that doesn't block diatom pores
    Diatom paint requires a binder
Diatom doesn't cure by itself - it must be mixed with a binder. Ordinary binders block diatom pores and reduce function. More diatom isn't always better - binder type and ratio matter.
Increasing diatom content requires more binder for hardness, but too much binder reduces diatom function. Without enough binder, the surface may be weak and melt or powder when wiped. Some products state they cannot be touched or wiped.
Problems with ordinary binders
Binder types include resin, plant glue, starch, cement, lime (slaked lime), gypsum. Resin bonds best and is most stable, but increasing amount blocks diatom pores and reduces humidity control. Using only natural materials (plant glue, starch) without resin typically gives weak surfaces that may melt or crumble when wiped, and age faster - powdering after a few years.
Sanga binder doesn't block diatom
To fully utilize the high moisture absorption/desorption/adsorption performance of Wakkanai diatomaceous earth, we developed a moisture-permeable water-based acrylic binder. Unlike ordinary resin-based binders, this binder does not block the pores that control humidity. It is also safe and eco-friendly, releasing no harmful substances such as formaldehyde. (Patent pending)

Diatom paint is not better when it has more diatom content - the binder matters too. To increase diatom content while maintaining sufficient hardness and durability, more binder is required. Adding more binder reduces diatom functionality and may be counterproductive, but not adding it affects durability and may cause powdering.
Sanga uses extra-white freshwater diatomaceous earth for especially bright colors
Sanga and Daichi use the same color package; Sanga has brighter colors than Daichi.

Application Tips

Application tips

Sanga is easy to apply. Keep movements natural and avoid visible seams. Apply in semi-circular motions, working left to right (or right to left) and top to bottom. Finish by smoothing to remove any uneven trowel marks.

Application tips

A spray bottle is essential for application. When the surface is too dry during finishing, lightly mist with water to facilitate smoothing.

Application tips

A quality finishing trowel makes smoothing easier and improves results. Choose a thin (0.3mm) and flexible trowel.

Color Selection

Custom colors

Custom colors can be matched even if not in the standard range. If you want to match existing wall colors during renovation or create an original color, please contact us. (As inorganic pigments are used, please inquire about color matching range)
